TRAIN ATTRACTION RETHEME

Story/Set Design & Fabrication, On-Ride Audio Development

During extended downtime for the park’s train attraction, I was given the opportunity to design new theming elements and develop a custom on-ride audio system.

The station and queue were refreshed with ambient telegraph audio foreshadowing train robbers, along with various “easter eggs” celebrating the park railroad’s 60+ year history. Along the layout, a faux Model T was fabricated, and additional effects including themed signage and a burning fuse illusion were added to the train tunnel section.

To enhance the guest experience and fill visual gaps in the ride, I developed a bespoke on-ride audio system requiring no operator input. Two inductive proximity sensors mounted under the train chassis detected metal flag plates along the track, triggering corresponding audio cues. This system allowed background music to play continuously while narration was overlaid dynamically, with timing variations adjusting naturally to the train’s speed. A secondary “homing” proximity sensor reset the system at the end of each cycle.
